Redfish Fly Fishing Tips for Louisiana Marshes

Targeting redfish on the fly in the waters near Hopedale is all about presentation and patience.

1. Lead the Fish

Cast ahead and past the line the fish is swimming —not directly on top of it. This prevents spooking and gives a natural presentation.

2. Watch the Fish, Not the Fly

Focus on the fish’s behavior:

• If it turns → it sees your fly

• If it accelerates → get ready

3. Keep Your Strips Slow

Redfish prefer a natural, subtle movement. Longer strips are good to get the fly in position but once its there small ticks will entice the fish to eat.

4. Be Ready for the Eat

The take is often visual—wait until you feel the weight before setting the hook. Its called removing the food. It’s hard to not set the hook when you a see a redfish eat your fly but you need to wait to feel them before setting the hook.
